The Caro-Kann Defense is one of the most solid chess openings black can play against 1. e4. The Caro-Kann was made popular on a large scale by the efforts of former World Chess Champion José Raúl Capablanca in the earlier parts of the 20th century. The Caro-Kann became associated with Capablanca’s incredibly solid style as the former champion would use it to draw with black, seemingly at will. But don’t be fooled – as not only is the Caro-Kann an exceptionally solid opening choice for black against 1. e4, it can present definite danger if white is not fully prepared. In the main lines, black almost always achieves a solid equality from the opening (at best white usually obtains a small, lasting advantage). However if you are not prepared to fight the Caro-Kann with white, you might want to consider using a different type of sideline to minimize your need for extensive preparation. In the following chess video excerpt from the chess DVD ¨White Shockers Vol. 2 – Caro-Kann, Scandinavian Defense, Old Speckled Hen, Polar Bear¨ IM Andrew Martin recommends a remarkably simple sideline solution for white against the Caro-Kann Defense involving 1. e4 c6 2. Ne2!?
