Chess computers: from Mechanical Turk to Deep Blue

If you’ve read anything about Computer Chess, it’s almost impossible to avoid references to the Mechanical Turk (1770s) and Deep Blue (1990s).

 

But, what about the 200 years in-between? In an interesting and informative article about ‘brute force versus intelligence‘, the authors explain the evolution – and rise of – the Chess machines.

This stops short of the all-powerful Chess engines, such as Houdini + Rybka et all, which are breaking through ELO 3000.  Indeed, there are iPhone apps capable of crushing 99% of us Chess folks!

That said, it’s still an interesting read …
